The Indian Ecological Society (IES) was established in 1974 with eminent ecologist, educationist and administrator, Prof. A.S. Atwal as the Founder President. It is one of the pioneering organizations of India engaged in advances in ecological sciences and environmental protection.

The specific aims and objectives of the society are :

  • To advance the cause of ecology in India
  • To encourage and promote ecological studies in the country and to integrate research in different fields of ecology
  • To cooperate with organizations with related aims and interests and provide opportunities for communication among ecologists
  • To provide technical know-how for reducing environmental pollution through proper recycling of industrial and agricultural wastes
  • The Society attempts to fulfil the above objectives by publishing the Indian Journal of Ecology, proceedings and such other publications as may be considered desirable. The journal is considered a premier journal reporting research findings in the field of basic and applied ecology.

Indian Journal of Ecology (Indian J Ecol) Print ISSN-0304-5250

This is the official Journal of the Indian Ecological Society, published since 1974.  Indian Journal of Ecology is a refereed and peer-reviewed journal published in the English language. Journal is multidisciplinary in nature, with emphasis on  basic and applied ecology. Until 2013, only a print copy of the journal was published. Since 2014,  Volume 41 (2), the Journal has been published in both  print and online modes, and all issues since then  have been archived and are available at https://www.indianjecol.org/volumes-issues.   The number of issues per year (per volume) increased from 2 (1974-2016) to 4 (2018-2020) and then to 6 (2021-2025). Beginning in 2026, four regular issues of the journal will be published annually in March, June, September, and December, as well as special or conference issues. This journal covers all aspects of the world’s agroecosystems. The Journal has an NAAS rating of 5.38.
